First day of spring, and our lake economy
With the first day of spring finally arriving, Lake of the Ozarks will hopefully show a slight increase in visitor count! Let's face it, our lake is an attraction and has always been in it's own small "niche" outside the control of the greater economy. But with the greatest downturn in the economy that most of our readers have seen, it has had far outreaching effects on our beloved lake, it's tourism, and the number one driver of our local economy -boat and real estate sales. As we round the corner on this years season, it is important to understand that some of our surrounding cities have been hard hit by this slump. Eldon Missouri has seen two car dealers close down, Lakeway (Ford) and LLoyd Belt (Chevy). Several marinas and industry related businesses at the lake and the surrounding area have seen layoffs and cuts of some type. Major industry such as Fasco, a major provider in electrical motors have announced closure. These few closing alone will output approximately 500-1000 people into the job market. Today (20th) the Eldon Motor Vehicle and Driver License office will close permanently! Real estate agencies at Lake of the Ozarks and local areas have also been hit hard and some have closed their doors.
In the year 2009, we are all looking for a glimpse of the future that mimics the past -and that is almost certainly our influx of tourism, which bridges properity to all of our surrounding cities, towns, and villages.
This year will no doubt bring a sense of urgency! Remember to shop, buy and visit our local businesses. Patronize your local bars, restaurants and establishments. Purchase your essentials from local shops, grocery stores and vendors!
As a reminder, even if you don't live in the Mid-Missouri area you may still (and are encouraged to) list your boat with us for free!
